Maximilian Schreck, a German actor, was born in Berlin on September 6, 1879. He received his acting training at the Berlin State Theater, where he studied until 1902. His acting debut took place on the theatrical stage in the city of Speyer, and then for two years he toured Germany, performing in Zittau, Erfurt, Lucerne, Bremen, Halle, and Frankfurt am Main. He then returned to Berlin and joined the theater troupe of the renowned Max Reinhardt. Many members of this troupe, including Max, later made significant contributions to the film industry. From 1915 to 1918, Schreck participated in World War I. In 1919, he joined the Munich Chamber Theater troupe, where he performed on stage for the next three years. His most notable role in Munich was as the freak show owner Grub in Bertolt Brecht's debut play "Drums in the Night". It was during this time that he made his film debut.
